What to watch, read and listen to this weekend: Aaron Chen, Super Mario Galaxy and Robyn

On streaming: Aaron Chen: Funny Garden Streaming on Netflix In 2023, Australian comedian Aaron Chen moved to New York to "get better at comedy". He'd already gained success in the local scene, landing best newcomer at Melbourne comedy festival and later selling out a run of shows at Sydney's State Theatre. He even won a Logie last year for his role in Kitty Flanagan's ABC TV comedy Fisk. But Chen wanted to challenge himself; to live and work in a place where no one knew who he was. That effort seems to have paid off with the release of his Netflix special this week, filmed in New York by Australian filmmaker Henry Stone. It's a show that combines Chen's deliberately awkward, slightly deadpan tone and tight joke writing about everything from overnight oats to taxes with observations about married life, his move to the US and the precarity of a career in stand-up comedy. Some of the real joy comes not from carefully crafted punchlines but when you see Chen say something that seems to surprise even himself. He cracks up — and the audience does too. We may not be able to see Chen on Australian stages this year, but at least we can join him in his Funny Garden. — Hannah Story At the cinema: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Over the next few weeks, a lot of people will have to watch The Super Mario Galaxy Movie to entertain kids during the school holidays or because they have a loved one who is a diehard Nintendo fan. The latest in Nintendo and Illumination's quest to take the world of Mario to the big screen sees the plumber brothers team up Princess Peach, Toad and newcomer Yoshi to save Princess Rosalina who has been kidnapped by Bowser Jr. The colourful and energetic action does its best to cover up the fact that the film is mostly light gameplay disguised as a feature. Multi-hyphenate artist Donald Glover does his best to have fun with a full-throated voice performance as Yoshi. For some, seeing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie might be unavoidable, but there are ways to soften the blow; namely brushing up on Mario lore so you can at least identify the overwhelming amount of Easter eggs stuffed into nearly every second of the movie. — Velvet Winter Album: Robyn — Sexistential Out now via Young / Remote Control Records You get out of a Robyn album what you put in. Whether you're sad, frustrated, besotted, or euphoric, her songs will meet you where you are. On Sexistential, like all '"modern era" Robyn records, the Swedish star deals in the unpredictable. Her production choices are both jolting and thrilling, and she never leans on predictable tropes to fill space. The title track, for instance, is a depiction of maternity that somehow references hentai, You Don't Mess With the Zohan, and the realisation that "a whole universe exists in between [her] thighs". The grooves on a Robyn record work their way into your body — a clarion call to the dancefloor where you can express whatever emotion she's tickled. Here they're all a bit flashier and more immediate than what she delivered on her brilliant 2018 record Honey, as she gives in to the urge to fill every space with sound. It usually works — the Fripp‑esque guitar that closes out Really Real and the alien voices scattered through Talk to Me are solid examples of the benefits of such excess. While Sexistential might feel less essential than Robyn's very best work, it remains a high‑water mark for modern pop. A vivid collection of dance‑pop bangers that reminds us the best magic happens when you bring your whole self to the party. — Dan Condon Recipe: Slow-cooker lamb leg A leg of lamb isn't the cheapest meal but if you are after something special this Easter, it's hard to beat. And if you bulk it out with salads and vegetable sides, there's a good chance you'll get a second (and even third) meal out of it. (Slow cooked lamb is excellent on a Greek-style pizza or in wraps.) This recipe is simple and the prep is quick enough to do in the morning, pop it in the slow cooker for the day and have a delicious, ready-to-eat lunch or dinner.
